Whistler Opening Weekend 2016

Opening weekend at Whistler this year was absolutely incredible. I don’t know if I have ever skied such deep snow. It is really hard to say how much powder there was but I believe it snowed over 4 feet in 3 days. I met up with my buddy in Vancouver Thanksgiving day after driving through a torrential downpour. Of course, I knew it was going to be good :). We headed up Friday after a huge dump and found glorious powder everywhere. Unfortunately, there were pretty long lines which drove us to venture out of bounds. We found a run which had yet to be skied, which served up waist deep pow till our legs were dead.

I ended up messaging my buddy after we went down to the village for a beer and food. Come to find out his friend hit a tree and had a compound fracture of his tibia and fibia. I went for one more run then headed to the hospital to check on his friend. It was very surreal to see someone who came to have fun in such misery.

The next day I headed up with some other friends who I was staying with in Pemberton to another 15 inches of new snow overnight. I literally couldn’t believe it. I respectfully said goodbye to my friends in the parking lot and went solo for the day. I honestly believe that day was some of the deepest powder I have ever skied. I had huge powder skis and was contently getting stuck when I would venture off trails. I explored in the trees near where I had skied the day before and found untouched deep powder up to my chest. I felt like a kid again. Unfortunately, the snow was so deep that a snowboarder died. Condolences to his friends and family. This is a good reminder to never ski near tree wells, especially after big dumps and early or late season.

So far this season if off to set records in my opinion. Let’s hope the snow continues, but let’s all be safe out there.
